Sample poems:

Racing down an A-Road

I’m hurtling through spring countryside,
mirror crammed with van, nose at tail.
“FAST! ”  I see it shout.

Pale fields rise up on either side,
tremble, sigh,
sink away, as we tear through.

Now a sway of trees,
green-laced,
fingers reaching out.

“Wait for us! ” they cry.

Van roars by
and mirror fills with fingers,
frail, bereft, beseeching.

“STOP! ” I see them wail,
“Oh, stop your race, won’t you? ”

But I have deadlines too.

Trees Between Blocks

Between the breeze blocks, trees are flaking.
Between the tower tops, they’re aching.
Between machine-built shards and sheens,
bricked-in, blocked-in, barred-in, boxed-in,
bent like beggars down on knees,
they droop.

No one stops to look or care,
office-hopping, square by square.
No one sees them stooped out there,
starved and squeezed, like limbs diseased,
quaking.

No one hears their pleas.

The buzz of big business blasts the air.
There are deals to make, bosses to please –
no time for trees!

Parenting

This is a game you can’t know ’til you try:
a game you can’t lose, can’t win,
with a lopsided die for a laugh and a cry:
a gamble – but well worth a spin.

What is a castle?

A diary
thumb print
overgrown path
ripple
reflection
photograph
shifting shadow
breath on a window
echo
echo of
ago

Present and Past

The castle stands, stands,
always here,
always there,
always now,
always then,
on the same ground as the earth goes round,
day by week by month by year
by aeon,
hand-made by men
and handed down:
a present from the past,
made to last.
